Maundy Thursday – A Different Kind of Passover Evening
For the past few years, our Maundy Thursday evening has taken the shape of a Passover dinner — a rich time of fellowship, centred on a shared meal and drawing on elements of the Jewish Seder. It’s been a good and meaningful way for us, as a parish, to reflect on the Lord’s Supper and the events of that night.
This year, we’ll be taking a slightly different approach. Our special guests for the evening will be Messianic Jews from the ministry Celebrate Messiah, who will lead us through Passover from their own lived experience and faith in Jesus as the Messiah.
While I’ve developed and led a Passover-style liturgy in past years, having the team from Celebrate Messiah with us will, I believe, enrich the evening even further. I wanted to give you an early heads-up about this change. Given much of what our city has wrestled with this past year, it feels like a timely and valuable opportunity to listen, learn, and share fellowship with Jewish believers who love the Lord Jesus — even though the evening itself isn’t shaped by current events.
It’s also worth saying that this may be the final year we run a Passover-style meal on Maundy Thursday, at least for a while. Some good things benefit from being rested, and there are many faithful ways to engage hearts and minds on this night — from shared meals, to prayer, to Scripture, to reflection on the cross (some of you may remember in my first year at Gymea watching The Passion of the Christ together).
For now, I hope you’ll consider coming along this Easter event as we fix our eyes once again on the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, the Lord Jesus, and receive this evening as a gift from God.
